Cable Testers
Okay, how much is your time worth? If you are doing your trouble shooting
for your employer, add at least half your hourly rate to cover all the
incidentals.
Now, compare that to the cost of a good cable tester. Could you save
three hours per year trouble shooting cable problems? If you can, you
can probably justify the investment.
And it is quite likely that you can eliminate the aid of an assistant
at the same time. Many times the problem isn't a "bad" cable, just bad
labeling and uncertainty about which cable goes where.
The CT-RU "Remote Cable Tester" is a good example of the power of a well
chosen tool. Not only can it provide a good end-to-end test of a cable,
but it also simplifies the process of finding the other end of a unlabeled
cable.
The "right tool for the job" will get the job done faster, more accurately
and make you look more professional.
P.S. Never overlook the value of appearing professional. It will improve
your dealings with your peers and convince your employer that you know
your stuff.
